The relationship between social discomfort and social phobia has been an issue of debate.Earlier research has held that the two terms describe different degrees of the same property (e.g.Turner,Beidel & Townsley,1990).Indeed,Furmark (2000) suggested that shyness – as a personality trait associated with discomfort in social situations – and social phobia have many common hallmarks,though shyness characterizes a wider and more heterogeneous category of individuals.Definitions of shyness include discomfort,anxiety,excess self-awareness and failure to participate appropriately in social situations,leading to social inhibition and withdrawal that prevents the individual from reaching their interpersonal or professional goals (Crozier,1979; Henderson & Zimbardo,2005; Pilkonis,1977a,1977b).Thus,there may be no qualitative difference between social discomfort associated with shyness,and social phobia.In the present work we assume instead that the two may be seen as different levels of intensity of the same experience and embrace Rapee and Spence’s (2004) model of a continuum for social anxiety.At the lowest end,low levels of social anxiety entail a wish to be positively appreciated by others,which nevertheless does not prevent social activities.Further on is placed moderate social anxiety,described as shyness causing some social discomfort and social avoidance.
