The people in ancient Epypt had a writing system called hieroglyphics(象形文字) ,which was a type of picture writing.For a long time ,no one was able to understand this language .However ,the discovery the meaning of the Rosette Stone has helped scientists to discover the meaning of this lanuage .
The Rosette Stone is a large stone on which there are three written languages .The first language is hieroglyphics ,the second is the common language of ancient Egypt ,and the third is Greek .It was concluded that this stone probably contained the same message but in three different languanges .AFrenchman ,Francis Champollion ,used his knowledge of Greek and his limited knowledge of hieroglyphics to translate the message .The discovery and translation of the Rosette Stone allowed the translation of other messages in hieroglyphics and gave the world more insight into ancient Egypt .
The Rosette Stone was discovered in 1799 by a French soldier nesr the Egyotian town of Rosette .Today it lies in the British museum in London .
