It is becoming increasingly common to incorporate a system of overpasses, underpasses, culverts, and tunnels along roads and railroads to decrease the barrier effect and restore connectivity of habitats.Systematic monitoring and evaluation of such crossing structures has lagged because of high costs and lack of commitment to adaptive management of roads.Yet,it is clear that wildlife crossing structures have the potential to reconnect fragmented habitat. In an illustrative study, male and female mountain pygmy-possums were separated by a road, and this species of conservation concern suffered declining breeding success. To address this issue, tunnels under the road and habitat corridor leading to the tunnels were constructed to reconnect habitat for males and females, restoring habitat connectivity.Wildlife crossing structures are one way and probably the only effective way of accomplishing this connectivity across roads.
History of Research to Prevent Wildlife Fatalities and Improve Road Permeability
Research on wildlife fatalities on roads has historically focused on ungulates. When large ungulates are hit by vehicles, there are high economic costs and human fatalities. In the United States, annual costs due to ungulate-vehicle collisions were $7.8 million in 1991 and grew to $1.2 billion in 1995.Ungulate fatalities are widely recognized as a problem around the world, especially in the United States and European Union.Because of there issues, documentation of wildlife fatalities and implementation of mitigation techniques initially focused on preventing ungulate crossings instead of restoring habitat connectivity.Current work expands beyond human/economic concerns to addresses other species of conservation concern and,in rare cases, communities of species in attempts to increase road permeability and restore connectivity in the landscape.
