1. It is undeniable that the impacts of the modern mass media such as films or televisions already enter to our daily life and society. No double, with the scope of mass media expending and the relevant technologies becoming more mature, the effect will even become more greater, and so attractive that no one will able to escape. Already, it can be seen how the western movies have amazing effects on the young generation: regardless of their sex, they grow long-hair, commonly part of which is dyed in gold; every one wears jeans no matter which season, usually knees of which are deliberately scrapped; boys are fond of earrings or other odd ornament; girls are keens on Marlboros and strange bad words.
The major ways that mass media impact the public are by making the topics of discussion. The mass media produce questions to public (or consumers) to talk and think about. Titanic has brought about the disturbance in the worldwide scope by praise and to fascinating the permanent love; Prime Color and Wag the dog trigger off the debate on right and duty of the president of the United States. Antiwar films such as Tears of the Sun and All Quiet On the Western Front among others have make the question, that is, any war is really to advocate the faith or is it really worthy than an individual makes sacrifices to his country and at the same time ignores his family and his personal value.
The mass media are affecting on the understanding that what is important and what is not important (to know). The “important” issues are found on the first pages of the newspapers (or the beginning of the television programs). The “not important” stories are those not to be told at all. The “not very important” stories are usually very short and hidden in the last pages. Actually censorships present all media, including its distributing such as Internet. Through predisposing public issues, the mass media makes decisions for us. Even though there are critical thinking individuals in any society, sthey are definite minority. All public are really lack of critical thinking skills, so they always are induced.
In brief, the mass media, by providing topics and the ways in discussing the important things, have significant effects on our observation of the truth, of the world or of the society structure. We must admit that it has an important role in our lives as a source of information, experiences, entertainment, amusement and relaxation.
