It really doesn’t matter whether you can draw or
not–just examining in detail,turning a flower or shell over in your fingers,opens doors.But taking the next step–establishes a connection between hand and eye that reinforces the link between eye and memory.Drawing is an experience of the facts and figures of a visual world that you can learn about in no other way.
I have no patience with the “Oh,if only I could draw!” school.Drawing is a state of mind,a way of seeing.So what if your efforts don’t produce masterpieces of self-expression?People who accept that they can’t write a symphony in a week expect to produce a skilled drawing on their first try.But it takes time and practice–and patience–to develop basic skills.
Enjoy the feel of pencil on paper without imposing goals you can’t meet.If you make a wrong line,erase it.Or start over.Acknowledge your fallibility and then forget it.
Landscapes are beautiful for what you leave out; the most magnificent landscapes I know are those Rembrandt did with a wash from a couple of brush strokes enlivened with a crisp pen.But that took years of practice and a large dose of genius,which are not the point here–the enjoyment of learning from precise observation.
