在圣诞前夜,Scrooge以前的一个名叫Jacob的同事化作鬼魂后来看他.生前Jacob曾像Scrooge一样冰冷、贪婪.他警告Scrooge如果他再这样继续自私地生活下去,他的来生也会不得好抱,永远痛苦,并且通知他今夜会有三个精灵过去,过去,现在和将来来到他家.因为他一直吝啬还贪婪所以如果Scrooge还不改正的话,死后便会坠入地狱.scrooge 看见地狱的惨状以后有些害怕,但还是装作毫不在乎.之后他遇见了过去,又重温了了一遍童年的温暖.但是看到后来自己的变化,以及亲友私下对他的态度,Scrooge痛苦极了于是生气的把过去赶走.之后他跟着现在看到圣诞节百家欢乐的情形.又嫉妒又后悔的看完了一切.最后未来来了,告诉Scrooge如果他不知悔改的话他将在这夜死去而且没有人会怀念他.这时Scrooge真的害怕了,下定决心改变自己.他终于看明白了自己的错误并且恳求未来再给他一个机会.
第二天,圣诞节到来了,早上Scrooge醒来的时候完全变了一个人,正如他向那三个鬼魂承诺的一样,变得宽厚、仁慈还十分愉悦.他成了远近闻名的好人.
