英语翻译
I instantly staggered to the window to check the weather and was devastated to see the dark clouds that had enveloped Hangzhou and the sun was not even visible.
I walked to breakfast in a deep gloom. My spirits were only slightly raised by Dom’s usual jokes as we ate in the dinning hall. However, mid breakfast,I glanced out the window, ever optimistic, the cloud started to clear.Instant euphoria rushed through my body.We finished eating,in no rush, only to see the first contact unfold in front of us.However, this is hardly the most spectacular phenomena of the eclipse, and we grabbed our bags to observe the remainder of the event.
Using my Mylar glasses I could watch the sun, whilst maintaining my eyesight.I watched as the moon slowly covered the sun blocking it from our view.Being interested in physics,I had prepared a list of phenomena to observe, and I rushed around trying to see all these once in a lifetime opportunities. The totality occurred at 9:40am,plunging us all into darkness, and total silence. The silence was then broken by cheers, shouts and fireworks from the locals and tourists.
Then there was light again, and all returned to normal,as if nothing had happened.First contact – The first time when the moon and sun touch
Shadows Sharpening – As less light is available the angles of rays hitting an object become less varied,so there is a sharper shadow.
Projected crescents in trees – The light from the sun shines through the gaps between the tree leaves, and this is diffracted meaning small images of the eclipse could be seen in each gap.
The Sky Darkens – Less light is reaching the earth from the sun,so less illumination is inevitable.
Temperature Drops – The sun emits infra-red radiation, which gives particles heat.As less radiation reached the Earth, the temperature was lowered.
Shadow Bands – Similar to the ripples on the bottom of a swimming pool, the ground displayed these bands of shadows. There is no definite explanation for this; however one theory is that they are caused by the air currents in the air.
Baily’s Beads – The moon has valleys and when the sun is behind these the light is not blocked. This forms a ring of “beads” of light around the perimeter of the moon.
Diamond Ring – The most spectacular of all, this is as totality approaches, the last valley illuminated forms a brilliantly bright light on one corner of the moon which is similar to a diamond ring.
Moon’s shadow rushing from west to east – As the sun is completely blocked,a shadow rushes across the ground at a speed faster than that of sound.
Chromospheres – Upon totality,a halo of light forms around the moon, this is the only visible light from the sun.
Stars in Midday – Stars,Venus and Mercury are all visible in the sky as normally they are not bright enough.
