What Olympic means to me
From the first session of the modern Olympic Games in 1896 to the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, the Olympic flame has burnt up over one whole century. We are to greet the 29th Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, when the Olympic flame will be lit in the vast land of China. As the host, what Olympic means to us? I think this is something all Chinese should ponder.
For me personally, what Olympic brings is a responsibility. As a young man, to spread the Olympic spirit is our unshirkable responsibility, just as the IOC honorary president Juan Antonio Samaranch put it: "The Olympic concerns all the youth. To spread Olympic spirit with purpose of tolerance, unity, fraternitywill will be the responsibility of the youth in the future." The Olympic Charter has pointed out that the Olympic spirit is mutual understanding, friendship, solidarity and the spirit of fair competition. Advocating friendship, solidarity and cooperation, fair competition have been imparted deeply into us Chinese, who is born and bred in a nation which has a history of over 5,000 years.
In the Olympic spirit, we have selectively chosen to absorb foreign culture and understand the customs of different ethnic differences. We spare no efforts to learn English - the most extensive used language, from young children in kindergarten up to the seventy-year-old, from salesmen to taxi drivers, from the initial small number of people to the present large one, English has been so widespread now in China. As middle school students, it is the simplest things we can do for the Olympic Games that we learn English hard so as to create an atmosphere for those around us to learn as well. So learning English is also a responsibility, not only to oneself, but to others as well.
Minister of Education Zhou Ji recently proposed for the young "Exercise one hour a day, work healthily for 50 years, and live a whole happy life". To a certain extent, this is undoubtedly a kind of interpretation to the Olympic spirit. Our school arranges some time from the compact class schedule everyday for the students to do gymnastics. Yet we do not learn to treasure this time, and just finish morning exercises with no concentration. Please do not forget that to do a good job in each section of the gymnastics and feel the charm of sports, is one of the embodiments of the Olympic spirit. It is impossible for everyone to make a direct contribution to the Olympic Games, but all of us can participate in it, and thus create a good atmosphere for sports. Cooperation in such projects can teach students team spirit and the the concept of fair competition. Last month the school has just held its sixth sport meeting, and everyone played hard in the name of his class's glory. Isn't it a good interpretation of Olympic spirit? It's hard for us to be selected into Olympic Games, but we can experience the Games with such high-level fun. Coubertin's famous saying "participation is more important than winning" just emphasizes on the essence of the Olympic spirit. In another speech, he pointed out: "Gentlemen, please remember this quote. This argument can be extended to many other fields. In life, what's important in a battle is not victory, but fighting. Dissemination of these maxims is to make man more vigorous - so that more preciseness, more braveness and more nobleness will be added to man's quality. It's obvious that Coubertin's promotion and rejuvenation of the Olympic movement is so broad-mind, It's starting point being to make mankind more perfect, not calling on the people to work hard only for the gold medal.
