What I want to remark on in this episode is the absolute difference in attitude that the boy's discovery brought about,at least for only one who knew about it,Simon himself.
No longer a malevolent power to be appeased,the thing on the mountain top can simply be forgotten,left to the worms and wind.Where before there had always to be the question of what the Beast wanted,of whether the Beast would be annoyed,of what the Beast would do,now these questions were simply inappropriate.The 'Beast' had turned out to be an unthinking thing,not a being capable of intending to do things,of having motives,of formulating plans.It had turned out to be nothing but a mass decaying flesh caught in a tangle of lines.
To say exactly what is so terrifying about a Beast waiting up there on the mountain-top is,I think,not easy;what is clear,though,is that all fears(in this respect) are immediately dissipated once the Beast turns out to be a purely inanimate thing simply flapping in the breeze.
At the back of out relief,it may be tempting to think,is the realization that there is nothing at the back of the flapping.There is no purpose behind it,it is not performed with any intention in mind,there was no motivation informing it.The question of what whatever-it-is 'means to do',a desperate worry if the 'thing' is a Beast,simply does not arise.
These points can be reformulated,more helpfully from our point of view,in terms of explanation.If we think the movement on the mountain-top is the Beast,our demand to know why it is moving about,just like our demand for an explanation of any other part of its behaviour,will be looking for an answer in terms of the creature's purposes,its motives,intentions,plans--the considerations or reasons that weigh with it.But once we realize that the movement is nothing but the flapping of the harness,our asking why the flapping occurs will require an explanation in terms of the principles of the straps and the blowing of the wind in a particular direction with a particular force resulted in the movement in question.
The importance of the contrast I have been dwelling on here---between one's attitude to a being,let us say.and one's attitude to an inanimate thing--is,perhaps obviously,that it is merely a dramatization of a certain contrast in the feelings we have in our everyday lives.All the time we recognize a difference,that is to say,between inanimate objects and other people,and behave very differently depending on which we think we are dealing with.
It is this contrast,recognized intuitively,I am suggesting,all the time,which I think writers have attempted to mark by the phrase.

这些观点可以被改写,更有效的从我们的角度来解释.如果我们认为那山顶的动静是头野兽的话,我们需要知道它为什么它会动,就好像我们需要知道“它”的其他动作的原因一样.会去找那些原因,那个野兽的目的,动机,想法,计划 – 还有相关的考虑和权衡.但是当我们了解那动静不过是带子的拍打声后,至于我们那“拍打声是哪来的”的问题,需要通过带子是什么东西,风要用一定力度吹通过一定方向作用在带子上的解释来回答.
我想通过这些变化说的重点是 – 人对活生生事物的态度,和一个没有生命的事物的态度,可能很明显的,不过是我们自己日常生活的某些矛盾感觉的所戏剧化了（夸张化）而已.我们了解到区别之后,比如说,在无生命体和人之间,行为会随着我们的认知而急剧变化.
与这种我一直在说的主观认知性的对比,我的观点是：作家们一直试图在套用.
