on the last day of school each year children are hoping for the last bell. they have cleaned their desks and put them in a corner. there is nothing on the bulletin boards. students put their homework and books into their backpacks and they will forget them quickly. in one classroom ,there is a note on the blackboard to tell who will keep the class gerbil during the summer. there is nothing in the fish tank and students have cleaner it. the garbage cans is full of discarded science projects and other waste things.
In another classroom,students are watching a video of the year. the video was created from photos of their activities throughout the year. it began with a class photo from the fist dayof school showing everyone sitting in their new seats with hands in their backs. photographs of open house,the trips to the museums, halloween costumes,science exhibitions,and school trips bring back memories of a meaningful school year.
Gifts from a few students are on the empty teacher’s desk in another classroom. “thank you for being such a great teacher”is written on the whiteboard by someone,and students quickly sign their names following the message. saying goodbay is exchanged. hugs and good wishes are handed out as the countdown begins.
