'what seems to be'可以从句子中去掉而不影响句子的“完整”.句子变成After a hundred years, ... ...句子原义变化了,但是主干after + a period of time e.g. after two hours没缺.总之它是一个自成一体的修饰成分,自身因为有SEEM又带有“好似”的意思.
