庐山早在6000年前,便有人类活动.传为大禹时所作的《禹贡》及稍后的《山海经》,均有关于庐山古称的记载.公元前126年,司马迁“南登庐山”,并将“庐山”载入了中国第一部纪传体史书《史记》.东晋陶渊明、谢灵运、宗炳等一大批文化名人,陆续来到庐山,创造了杰出的文化艺术作品,使庐山成为中国田园诗的诞生地、中国山水诗的策源地、中国山水画的发祥地.此后,李白、白居易、苏轼、王安石、黄庭坚、陆游、康有为、陈三立、胡适、徐志摩和郭沫若等1500余位文人相继登山,写诗4000余首,其中名篇佳作灿若珠玑.
庐山“道释同尊”.公元4世纪,高僧慧远在庐山建东林寺,首创观像念佛的净土法门,代表了佛教中国化的大趋势;禅师竺道生在庐山设精舍,开创“顿悟说”.道教禅师之一的陆修静,在庐山建简寂观,编撰藏道经1200卷,奠定了“道藏”基础.从公元4世纪至13世纪,庐山宗教兴盛,寺庙、道观一度多至500余处.1942年,世界佛教联合大会在庐山召开.至今,庐山仍有佛教、道教、伊斯兰教、基督教、天主教等宗教及教派的寺庙、道观、教堂等.

There had people’s activities around Lushan 6000 years ago.It was said that in “Yugong The Tribute of Yu”written in Dayu’s days and “Shan Hai Classic”later,both had the record of Lushan’s old name.In the year 126 B.C.,Sima Qian climbed Lushan from the southern side and recorded Lushan into “The Book of History”,which became the first book of historical records and biography.A group of cultural celebrities of Jin Dynasty,such as,Tao Yuanming,Xie Lingyun,Zong Bing and so on went to Lushan successively and created the glorious cultural artistic works,which made Lushan the birthplace of Chinese eclogue,Chinese scenic poem and landscape painting.Then about 1500 literators climbed Lushan in succession,including Li Bai,Bai Juyi,Su Shi,Wang Anshi,Huang Tingjian,Lu You,Kang Youwei,Chen Sanli,Hu Shi,Xu Zhimo,Guo Moruo and so on,leaving 4000 poems,among which are excellent ones.
Taoism and Buddhism are both respectful in Lushan.In 4th century A.D.,the highly respected monk Huiyuan built the Donglin Temple in Lushan,creating the Pure Land method of looking and reading of the imagination of the Amitabha’s appearance firstly and representing the great trend towards Buddhistical Sinicization;Chan Master Zhu Daosheng built vihara in Lushan and founded “Insight Theory”.Lu Xiujing,one of the Taoist Chan masters,built Jianji Taoist Temple in Lanshan,where 1200 pieces of Taoist scriptures were compiled,laying the foundation of “Daoist Canon”.From 4th century A.D.to 13th century,there were as many as 500 Buddhist temples and Taoist temples once due to the religious thrive.Year 1942 witnessed the celebration of World Buddhist United Conference.Till now,Lushan still have Buddhist,Taoist,Islamic,Christian and Catholic temples,Taoist temples,churches,etc.
