如果would have liked to do 是本想做什么而没做,那么第一句怎么解释?
另外加个问题.

为什么they were brought down a peg or two不用过去完成时?不是有虚拟吗?

再问： 1、老师你给的例句，The Cause they had thought could never fall had fallen forever. 那个主义她们原来认为是决不会失败的，现在永远失败了。这里的“ had fallen forever”是否要改为have fallen forever？2、那个是句子出自我就是问问，看看我是不是又搞错了。
再答： 改了以后就与主句的 had thought 的时态不一致了。
再问： 但是had thought不是对过去的虚拟吗？不是过去的过去。
