INTRODUCTION
This Guideline should be read in conjunction with the Specification - Limitation of Fire Risk in Substations and Switchrooms.It is intended to describe an alternative means of detection and control of fire for use in confined areas or to protect individual items of equipment,particularly where the more conventional fire protection systems would be impractical or insufficiently sensitive.
With this method,the air contained within individual cubicles or small switchrooms is regularly sampled and monitored and when a fire is detected,extinguishant is delivered to the location of the fire by means of small bore pipes.
The advantages of the system are high sensitivity,with the consequent benefit of early detection; concentration of the extinguishant at the fire source and low usage of extinguishant.
