In summary,monodispersed spherical colloids of titania
have been synthesized in large quantities using glycolated pre-
cursors.The hydrolysis rate of a conventional sol-gel precur-
sor could be significantly slowed and thus better controlled by
forming a coordination complex with ethylene glycol.Spheri-
cal colloids of titanium glycolates with uniform diameters in
the 200-500 nm range could be conveniently synthesized
using this method.These spherical colloids could be readily
assembled into crystalline lattices with qualities sufficiently
good for optical characterization.We have also demonstrated
that these spherical colloids could be converted from titanium
glycolate to anatase and then to rutile by annealing the sam-
ples at elevated temperatures in air.We believe the availabil-
ity of these monodispersed spherical colloids with high refrac-
tive indices in copious quantities will enrich our studies of
photonic bandgap crystals associated with colloidal crystals.
