One limitation of our studies was the usage of fashion students as a proxy for cultural capital.While our measure was strong enough to capture differences in ability to pick up subtle signals,cultural capital has multiple components (Holt 1998) and merely being a fashion student is certainly a crude proxy.There are also limitations regarding how we presented the product stimuli.Participants (and coders) were only given a single photo of each product,but having them actually hold the product and view it from every angle would certainly provide more depth.That said,we used a single photo because we believe it best reflects what happens in everyday life.While people’s best friends may be able to hold their handbag,for example,most people will only get a fleeting glimpse of what someone is carrying as they walk by.Consequently,we felt that having people look at photos was a fair representation of the way people often encounter brand signals.
