IN addition to normal classes,we have a weekly meeting to improve communication skills,social awareness,and speech-making.
At first I thought that the meeting would just fill an hour and give the school something to call unique.
The first meeting was a discussion.Two students in chaerge of our group seemed to be leading the talk.
The first speeches,each a minute long,were ridiculous:only half the students had prepared speeches,and even they had room for improvement.I don't remember what my speech was about,but I remember being told to speak louder,gesture and show more confidence.Noboby listended to me.
The next week we were asked to mak two-minute speeches.I needed a topic!Karate?German?Bank robbers The boring meeting?Yes!I wrote a speech about how communucation skills,social awareness,and speech-making were useless without a good topic to talk about
My speech was exactly two minutes long.My communication skills really did improve.people were listening!
The meeting are becoming more interesting.Last time,we Martin Luther King,Jr--"I Have words should have been stressed.It was far better than our first discussion.
Although it is not a usual high school class,I'm starting to think it should be .It covers a part of communication that isn’t taught elsewhere.would you agree?
