Flying the Flag
Steven Ho and Frank Wang wanted to be heroes.
“I want people to read about us in the history books,” Steven said.“I want to do something that will be remembered forever.”
“Me,too,” Frank said.“But what can we do?”
The two men thought about this for many weeks,then Steven said,“Let’s climb the highest mountain in the world.Then we’ll be remembered.”
“That’s a good idea.” Frank said,“ but how can we prove that we have climbed it?”
“We’ll put a flag on the top,” Steven said.“Anyone flying over the mountain in an airplane will see it.”
Frank agreed that this was a good idea and the two men set off.
They walked for three weeks to reach the bottom of the mountain,and then they began to climb.
The mountain was very steep and they could climb only a few hundred feet a day.At night they slept in a small tent.
It was very cold in the mountain and soon they were climbing across snow and ice.
But at last,after many days of hardship,they reached the top.
“We’ve made it,Steven,” Frank said.“We’ve finally climbed to the top of the highest mountain in the world.We’ll be famous.All we have to do now is plant our flag in the ice.”
“That’s right,” Steven said,“and then we can go home.”
He waited for Frank to plant the flag.When Frank did nothing,
Steven said,“Why aren’t you planting the flag?”
“I haven’t got it,” Frank said.“I thought you had it.”
Safe Hands
A fire engine raced though the streets to fire.Its siren was screaming “Wee-wu,Wee-wu,Wee-wu.”
It was not long before the engine reached the fire.Smoke was pouring out of an apartment building where many people lived.There were flames coming out of the top floor windows.
The firemen quickly connected their hoses and began pouring water onto the building.
Then a woman appeared in one of the top floor windows.
“Help!” she cried.“Help!”
She had a small baby in her arms.
“Throw the baby down,” one of the firemen called.
He was a big,strong man with wide shoulders.
“I don’t dare,” the woman shouted.“You might drop him.”
The fireman laughed.
“Don’t worry,” he said.“I won’t drop him.I’m the goalkeeper for the fire department’s soccer team.”
The woman looked down at the fireman.She saw his wide shoulders and big hands.
“All right,” she said.
She leaned out of the window and dropped the baby.
It fell safely into the fireman’s hands.
The only problem was that for a moment he forgot where he was and what he was doing.
He bounced the baby three times and then kicked it halfway up the street.

“把孩子扔下来!”一个消防员大喊.这个人又高又壮,有着一副宽肩膀.
“我不敢!你会摔着他的!”女人大叫.
消防员大笑起来：“别担心,我不会摔着他的.我是消防员橄榄球队的守门员.”
女人往下看了看这个消防员,她看到了他宽宽的肩膀和一双大手.
“好吧.”她把身子从窗户里倾出来,把孩子扔了下去,孩子安全地落在了消防员的手里.
只是,有那么一小段时间,这个消防员忘了自己在哪里,在做什么.
他把孩子往上扔了三次,然后把他一脚踢到了街道中间.
