(Informative) Abstract:
In his early years, Mr. Ding had led a well-off life, but experienced a lot of difficulties in the later years. He suffered from an un-righted wrong in the "Cultural Revolution" period, and, with grief and indignation, he committed suicide by jumping off a building thus causing a number of fractures though he survived fortunately. Mr. Ding said: "If I can't live, then just die, or if I can't die, then I'll continue talking (writing)." From then on, he committed no more suicide no matter how difficult the life was.
Mr. Ding had a wide learning and retentive memory with wealthy knowledge and solid literary powers. He is lofty and unyielding in character and had never asked for help from his relatives or friends even during the period when he was so poor that he could not feed himself. In his later years, he lived in seclusion as a hermit in a house called "Xichouju" in Tuanjie (the Unity) Township while making friends with a variety of persons of talents and virtue.
Mr. Li Xintian, a connoisseur of calligraphy and painting in Beijing Historical Relics head office, appraised his calligraphy as “(a talent) never shown up in two hundred years”, and Mr. Fang Jiekan, a master seal-cutter, spiritually attracted though not met, has cut ten pieces of seals for him.
Mr. Ding did not care for wealth, fame or material desires. Because of his fame, many high officials and rich people went for his calligraphies, but returned in vain. However, he used to teach by himself the local kids of the township to read and write. Being kind and gentle in personality, he has always been in belief of the principle of “Man's nature is good at birth” in dealing with others, though he has been deceived and betrayed many times.
He is a real hermit of modern times and has made intensive studies on works of the Confucianists, the Buddhists and the Taoists. It’s worthy to make a documentary on him, not only because of the value in himself, but also because of that he is a representative of the literati and scholars, who are the real intellectuals with knowledge and wisdom, of his generation.
For all the above, I believe the documentary on Mr. Ding is of great significance.
KEY WORDS: Mr. Ding, Scholar, Hermit
