While there is no universally accepted definition of a small business,the following client
characteristics,which are not usually present in larger companies,are typically found in
small businesses:
• They are managed by one or a few key executives whose talents are most apt to lie
in marketing,manufacturing or research and development rather than in "staff-type" functions
like finance and accounting.
The executives and their families are apt to own all or a large part of the company.
Because of their talents and ownerships,the executives dominate the affairs of the company to a far greater degree than in large corporations.
The business itself,while by no means necessarily so,usually tends to be relatively
uncomplicated,with changes from year to year that are easily identified and understood
and with systems and procedures and a modus operandi that are consistent for a
substantial period.
From the auditor's point of view,it is usually a company whose business he understands
and that is dominated by a few individuals whom he knows.It can be,however,a volatile,complicated entity,or it may be growing explosively; but it probably,under any circumstances,will have a few dominant leaders.
