Solution
Another type of rigid coupling is the sleeve coupling illustrated in Fig.3-4(a) .This is merely a sleeve that connects the two shafts must be correctly aligned ,since there is no flexibility to the coupling.The sleeve is then fastened with setscrews to the two shafts .The amount of the torque that can safely be handled depends on the holding power of the setscrews .Sometimes a drive pin (pin with grooved slots) is used ; in that case ,a hole is drilled through the sleeve and shaft .Fig.3-4(b) shows this application .The size of the pin can be calculated from the following equation :

Flexible Couplings
Because of manufacturing tolerances in the fabrication and mounting of parts ,perfect shaft alignment is almost impossible to achieve .When two shafts are connected with rigid couplings ,any misalignment (linear or angular) has detrimental effects on several parts of the assembly .Some of these effects are (1) reversed flexure on shafts ,(2) unexpected and excessive loads on bearings ,and (3) excessive vibration.Flexible couplings can eliminate some of these problems ,provided the amount of misalignment is not too grea.
