We had been best friends ever since second grade,If we wanted to see each other all we to do was to walk down the hall,and give our special knock.Mine was three knocks and a whistle,and Sylvee's was a fast kick to the foot of the door followed by "Claud,open up!"Yers passed and our talks graduated from stuffed animals to boys.
Our circle of friends also changed.
Most weekends Sylvee would invite her friends to sleep at her home,and only if I showed up to ask her to go to the park did I find out I hadn't even been invited.I felt unhappy at it.
Finally we stopped speaking .I really missed her .She was the wild one who was always ready to get her hand into things ,while I was calm and I often talked some sense into her .We made the perfact pair .
After graduation I was alone and started thinking about why our relationship went wrong .I needed answers,and Sylvee was the only one who could give them to me .I went to her home.The door opened and we just stared at erch other .I finally broke the ice and said quietly,"What happened?"
The story didn't stop.Her group of friends had pressured her not to be my friend because they didn't like us being so close.They also told Sylvee that they would drop her if she didn't,and she wouldn't have any friends ,including me .She asked if we could keep in touch and maybe pick up where we'd left off.
Itold her that would be impossible because I was so angry we had lost years of friendship over something so small.but I realized the girls who'd broken us apart.If one of us had just spoken up sooner,we could have kept our friendship.
