How would individuals with each of these three genotypes appear?The way each combination of genes expresses itself is known as the phenotype of the organism.A person with two alleles for attached earlobes will have earlobes that are attached.A person with one allele for attached earlobes and one allele for free earlobes will have a phenotype that exhibits free earlobes.An individual with two alleles for free earlobes will also have free earlobes.Notice that there are three genotypes,but only two phenotypes.The individuals with the free-earlobe phenotype have different genotypes.
For various reasons,certain genes may not express themselves.Sometimes,the physical environment determines if certain genes function.For example,some cats have coat-color genes that do not reveal themselves unless the temperature of the skin is below a certain point.Often,the only parts of a cat that become cool enough to allow the genes to express themselves are the tips of the ears and the feet.Consequently these areas will differ in color in color from the rest of the cat’s body.Another example in humans is the presence of genes for freckles that do not show themselves fully unless the person’s skin is exposed to sunlight.
