When I was born, the doctor told my mother that I had only one hand. Then he told her, "Don't take care of her differently FROM the other girls." And she did!
There were five girls in our FAMILY. One day when I was about seven, I came out of the kitchen, "Mom, I can't cut up potatoes. I only have one HAND." "You get back to cut up those potatoes, and don't use that as excuse for anything again!" Of course I could CUT UP potatoes - with my good hand. There was always a WAY, and Mom knew it. "If you try hard enough," she said, "you can do ANYTHING."
One day, our teacher told each of us to RUN across the money bars. When it was my turn, I shook my head. Some kids laughed. I went home CRYING. After work, Mom took me back to the PLAYGROUND. "Now, pull up with your right arm," she said. She stood by as I practiced. I'll never FORGET the next time I could run across the bars. The kids were standing there with their mouths OPEN.
Now, when I fear I can't do anything DIFFICULT, I see Mom's smile again. She had the heart to face anything. And she taught me I could, too.
