The amount,composition and concentration of waste-
water from electrochemical deburring,from ultra?ltration
of coolants and from multiple other sources in the factory
were recorded for one year.Wastewater parameters were
determined according to German Standard Methods
(DEV,1998)from 24-h composite samples.In the waste-
water from electrochemical deburring the sum of NO2±N
and NO3±N(ratio normally 0.6:1,respectively)was taken
as NOx±N.For analysis of the biodegradable portion of
the carbon fraction of the permeates or of other waste-
water streams,the BOD5 and the long-term BOD were
determined with a Sapromat

(Voith Sulzer,Heidenheim,
Germany).For this purpose wastewater samples(perme-
ates:30-fold diluted)were inoculated with pre-adapted
activated sludge from the sewage treatment plant of
Gaggenau/Germany.Tap water was used for dilution.
