As more and more books become movi e adaptations,I can't help but think how this will affect English classes.Thinking back to m y years in middle school and high school,I w as required to read a number of classics.Tod ay,a majority of those books are now also m ovies:Life of Pi,The Great Gatsby,Much Ado About Nothing and Anna Karenina,to name a few.Even contemporary books such as The H unger Games and Harry Potter are gracing th e big screen.In discussions with friends,I wil l often hear them say they are not going to r ead the book because the movie adapted fro m it will be out soon,which made me wonde r what effect,if any,movie adaptations will h ave on modernday students.Will the Commo n Core State Standards (CCSS) encourage the m to read the books more carefully or to use movies to supplement their understanding of the text?The CCSS requires students to provi de textbased evidence when reading and disc ussing a book.By focusing on such evidence,teachers can pull specific details from a book that may have not made the final cut when t he book was adapted for the big screen.For i nstance,after reading and watching The Hun ger Games,there were a number of details fr om the book that were missing from the film .A student who failed to read The Hunger Ga mes would not quite understand Rue's impac t on the games in the same way as someone who had read the book and remembered all t he details that went into 后面还有,字数不够就不写了
