We live by what we give
I hurried into the local department store to grab some last minute Christmas gifts.There I saw a little boy about 5 holding a doll.I watched him say to a woman:” Are you sure I don’t have enough money?” She replied a bit impatiently:”You know that you don’t have enough money for it.” The woman then went away.
After a bit I asked the boy who the doll was for.He said:“It is the doll my sister wanted so badly for Christmas.She just knew that Santa would bring it.” I told him that maybe Santa was going to bring it.He said:“No,Santa can’t go where my sister is…” He looked at me with the saddest eyes and said:“She has gone to be with Jesus.My daddy says that Momma is gonging to have to go with her.” Then the boy looked at me again and said:“I told my daddy to tell Momma not to go yet.I told him to tell her to wait till I got back from the store.”
I asked the little boy:“Shall we count that money one more time?” He grew excited and said:“Yes,I just know it has to be enough.” So I slipped some money in with his and we began to count it.
Of course it was plenty for the doll.He softly said:“Thank you Jesus for giving me enough money.”
I could not keep from thinking about the little boy as I finished my shopping in a totally different spirit than when I had started.And I kept remembering a story I had seen in the newspaper several days earlier about a drunk driver hitting a car and killing a little girl and the mother was in a serious condition.The family was deciding on whether to remove the life support.
Two days later I read in the paper where the family had disconnected the life support.I could not help myself and I went out and bought some white roses and took them to a funeral home where the young woman was.And there she was holding the beautiful doll,and the picture of the little boy in the store.
I left there in tears,my life changed forever.The love that little boy had for his little sister and his mother was overwhelming.“We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.”

我急忙进到当地那间百货店,抓住最后一秒买到圣诞礼物.在那里,我看见一个大约5岁的小男孩抱着一个玩偶,他对一个女士说：“你确定我的钱不够吗?”女士有点不耐烦的回答道：“你知道你的钱不足以来买这个玩偶的.”女士接着就走开了.没过多久,我问那个男孩：“你这个玩偶是想送给谁呢?”他回答说：“这个玩偶是我妹妹非常想要得到的圣诞礼物,她只知道圣诞老人会给她送来.”我告诉他,或许圣诞老人真的打算送给她呢!他接着说：“不,圣诞老人不会到达我妹妹那…….”他用一副非常难过的眼睛看着我说道：“她已经过世了,我爸爸说妈妈也快要和妹妹一起离开了.”那男孩再次看着我说道：“我让我爸爸告诉妈妈先不要走,我让他告诉妈妈等到我从百货店回来为止.”
我问那个小男孩：“我们可以在算一下有多少钱吗?”他显得有点兴奋,说道：“可以,我只知道这一定够的.”所以我往他的钱里塞了一些钱,接着我们就开始数了.
当然,钱已足够买下那个玩偶.他轻声说道：“感谢耶稣赋予我足够的金钱.”
当我以一种与我刚开始购物时完全不同的心态结束购物时,我不禁想起那个小男孩.我还记得几天前在报纸上看到的一个事故,这事故是关于一个酒后驾驶的司机与一辆汽车相撞,事故中,一个小女孩死亡,那个母亲受到重伤,她的家人尚未决定是否要放弃抢救这位母亲.
两天之后我在报上看到那个家庭已经拿掉那些维持生命的器械.我不由自主地跑出去,买了一些白玫瑰,送到那个年轻的女死者家里.那里,她拿着那个漂亮的玩偶,和那个小男孩在百货店的照片.
我含泪离开了那里,我的生活从此改变.那个小男孩给予他妹妹和妈妈的爱令人为之动容.“以我们的所得过我们的日子,以我们的给予创造我们的人生.”
