We don't half love crisps. We comsume,in Britain, around 600 packets of them annually-that's more than everyone else in Europe put together, around 150 packets for each and every one of us each year.
Most other countries see crisps as something you consume like olives:with an aperitif, before a meal. Here, chesse& vinegar and prawn cocktail are part not just of our regular diet, but of the British culture.
In part, this may be down to the fact that we're genetically hard-wired to love anything made of potatoes. Also, crisps go brilliantly with sandwiche,of which we also consume (for lunch) more than most nations. They also go with beer pretty well, whih is why they became the archetypal pub snack.Maybe we're just more of a snacking, eathing culture than others.
Either way, taken too far our passion for crisps won't do us any good. There's nothig wrong, obviously, with one packet of crisps. But it's a question of balance:despite manufacturers' recent effort to cut salt, saturate fat an total fat content in vast scale,a crisp remains a slice of potato fried in oil and spread with salt, and if you eat too many of them (which some of us,particularly young people, eveidently do) you won't be eating a balaced diet.
So why do you think we love crisps so much, and should anything more be done --- by the manufacturers,by the government,by us --- to make sure this is a grat British love affair that dosen't go sour?
So,everyone, are you more tending to artisan crafted sea salt and balsamic vinear or pickled onion Monster Munch?Personally,I can never decide, but my research will go on.
