The environmental control system of an underground mass rapid transit (MRT) system is significantly more complicated than that of a commercial building.Specifically,the environmental control system of the underground MRT system must incorporate special design features in tunnel ventilation,smoke exhaust,air conditioning and so on.There are several advantages for a MRT system installing platform screen doors (PSD),including keeping the heat and dust produced on the tunnel track from reaching the platform area and reducing the piston effect on the thermal condition and air flow draft in the platform area.However,the temperature in the tunnel area should be controlled to a certain value.Therefore,considering temperature control and energy saving,the design of the capacity of the tunnel exhaust air system is very crucial.The HVAC system of a MRT system with platform screen doors is an ‘‘open cycle’’,where most of the heat produced in the tunnel is removed by the under platform unit (UPE).In contrast,the HVAC system of a MRT system without platform screen doors is a ‘‘closed cycle’’,where the tunnel cooling load is removed by the station air conditioning system in summer and by the piston effect that introduces outside air in winter.There are only several MRT systems with PSD in the world,including Singapore,Hong Kong and Beijing.Therefore,the available information on the PSD environment control system is very limited,especially on the area of the energy aspect.Zhu et al.[2] reported an economical analysis for the thermal environment control system of the Beijing MRT system that installed platform screen doors.Wang et al.[3] provided measurement results of the piston effect due to train compartments,also for the Beijing MRT system.The installation of platform screen doors is currently planned for stations on the Hsin-chung Line of the Taipei MRT system.This investigation aims to simulate and compare the total energy consumption of a MRT system in cases with and without PSD and determine the minimum required exhaust flow rate of UPE.
