A frequently asked question among the tourists in Beijing is where the hutongs are Beijing’s hutongs originated from Yuan Dynasty.Once there were more than 6000 hutongs in Beijing. The first few were found in the Chaoyangmennei Da Jie and Dongsi Lu,which were neatly laid out with a similar distance between each other. The north-south orientated streets are called jie in Chinese, which are relatively wide, such as Nanxiaojie and Beixiaojie between Beijing Railway Station and Chaoyangmennei Dajie. There were many carriages in these dajie,or streets, therefore they are also named as malu, namely the road for horse-carriages.The west-east oriented streets are usually called hutong, which are fairly narrow. They are mainly for residents living in the siheyuan,or the quadrangle dwellings, nearby.
How many hutong are there in Beijing? It has been documented that there were up to thousands of them in Ming Dynasty, among which more than 900 within the city walls of Beijing and another 300 plus outside. In Qing Dynasty, there were up to 1800 and more than 1900 hutongs during the Republic-Period.It was estimated that there were more than 2550 hutongs after the foundation of PRC.Until now, there are more than 4000 streets and roads in Beijing.
In the contemporary Beijing, what people here are fond of are not the up-soaring landscapes or wide avenues, but the elegantly winding hutongs with cosy siheyuan nearby.
Therefore,it is can’t be more appropriate to make the culture of hutongs and siheyuan the symbol of the culture of the old Beijing.
