Once upon a time, there was a little girl called Nuwa. Her father was Emperor Yan and she loved to make things. She decided to make people. To do this she first took lots of yellow clay. Then she built people out of the clay. But this was too much work, even for a Goddess. So he took a rope and dipped it in mud and shook it so that drops of mud fell from it, and each drop became a man or woman. In this way nobles were formed from the clay models while peasants were formed from the mud droppings.
Later after the world was filled with men and women, the foundations of the sky started to fall and it was Nuwa who saved the day by melting five different stones and repairing it. One day ,she went boating on the Eastern Sea. While she was playing, a strong wind rose on the sea and her boat capsized. Just before she was died by the surging waves, her spirit changed into a beautiful bird. As it flew over the roaring sea, it cried sadly in the sound "jinwei, jingwei". That was why people called it "Jingwei".
The bird lived on a mountain near the sea. It hated the sea so much that it decided to fill it up. Every day, it flew to and fro between the mountain and the sea, carrying in a twig or a pebble from the mountain and dropping it into the sea.
One day, the roaring sea said to Jingwei, "Poor little bird, stop doing that meaningless thing! You'll never fill me up." Jingwei replied, "I'll fill you up no doubt! I will, even if it'll take me thousands of years! I'll fight on until doomsday!"
The brave little bird kept carrying twigs and pebbles from the mountain to the Eastern Sea without taking a rest.
